Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Pure Artistry Literary Cafe presents August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom directed by Paris Crayton, III April 15, 2016 thru April 17, 2016! Set in a rundown studio in Chicago, in 1927, where Ma Rainey is recording new sides of old favorites. More goes down in the session than music in this riveting portrayal of rage, racism, the self hate and exploitation. The story takes place over the course of an afternoon, as a group of musicians and the legendary blues singer Ma Rainey record several songs. Much of the play takes the form of discussions and arguments among the four musicians, each of whom brings his own perspective to questions of prejudice and the problems facing black people in American society. Toledo, a thoughtful, serious man, speaks of racial pride and the need for self-determination. Cutler places his trust in religion. Slow Drag is uncomplicated and unwilling to question his lot too deeply. Levee believes that his musical talent will bring him respect and power. Ma Rainey is outspoken, demanding, and well aware that she will be tolerated only as long as her records make money for her white producers. REVIEWS "Searing ... funny, salty, carnal and lyrical.... Wilson has lighted a dramatic fuse that snakes and hisses through several anguished eras of American life. When the fuse reaches its explosive final destination, the audience is impaled by the impact." - The New York Times ALL sales final. NO exchanges. NO refunds.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR: A Valentine's Dinner Concert
MONTGOMERY, AL Valentines Day is approaching and love definitely will be in the air at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art. The River Regions chorus, the Montgomery Chorale, is planning a romantic evening at the museum, blending beautiful music and delicious culinary delights. The Chorale will present Love Is in the Air, a Valentines Day-themed dinner concert on Friday, February 12th at 7PM. Since the appointment last year of its new artistic director, Dr. James Seay, the Montgomery Chorale is experiencing tremendous growth. Having nearly doubled in size, it now counts more than 110 singers among its ranks. Its concerts so far this season have included engagements at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Performing Arts Center. The February 12th concert, however, promises to be a more intimate affair. It will feature a smaller group of 24 singers known as the Montgomery Chamber Chorale. The Chamber Chorale recently performed excerpts from Handels Messiah in collaboration with the Alabama Dance Theater at the Davis Theater. The Chamber Chorale will be accompanied by Montgomery Symphony Violin Fellow Nadir Khashimov, Cello Fellow Natalie Helm and pianist Rebecca Taylor. Audience members will be treated to a full course meal with complimentary wine selections all provided by Jennie Weller catering. The concert will be held in the MMFAs Lowder Gallery and tickets are available for advance purchase at www.montgomerychorale.org. Prices are $125 per person, $200 per couple or $800 per table of eight. You are encouraged to buy tickets online soon as seating is limited.
